Don't expect impartiality; not that any exists.

The journos at Le Parisien see it as part of the repression that exists in the island against all who seek to dissent. Either it is ignored as though it did not exist or else belittled and humiliated where is has to be taken seriously from those, such as politicians, who are within the state structure.

Remember, as they say in the other parts of their article, they wrote 60 emails seeking comment but none was forthcoming. Such is the culture of silence.
Nick Le Cornuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14983215673635966459noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270985170721876.post-59832076351951873892013-05-06T18:43:45.936+00:002013-05-06T18:43:45.936+00:00I totally disagree. That's like saying the Referendum meetings should not have had a moderator, or Question Time should be an untrammeled free for all.

Can you imagine last Thursday if David Starkey had just been allowed to speak whenever he wanted (as he tried to do)?

I wouldn't say Senator Ozouf bullying and arrogant. His body language speaks of someone holding back anger, and knowing that he has to. He seems to come very close to losing his temper, but he does keep a lid on it. But he probably should work on that more.
TonyTheProfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10486414706261508994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270985170721876.post-36655863873919413552013-05-06T18:26:35.143+00:002013-05-06T18:26:35.143+00:00Let us be honest and clear about the function of t...Let us be honest and clear about the function of this invented indignation at the publication in a French newspaper of comments by a Jersey Deputy. It is of course in the words of Voltaire “pour encourager les autres”. In other words, like poor old Admiral Bynge, who lost the island of Minorca and was court-martialled by the Admiralty, the spectacle was designed to send a message that future dereliction of duty would be dealt with severely.

Senator Ozouf attempted to use a tried and trusted formula to reprimand and humiliate the particular individual and to warn others so inclined, that it was unacceptable to go outside the island with criticism.

We have seen examples in the recent past, beginning in the early 90s with a letter to the Financial Times by four Deputies. These eruptions have been quickly contained followed by the requisite repentance.

However, this time it went badly wrong.

The CTV encounter was a classic example of how politicians in a free debate show their skills and limitations. That is why it is so rare. There was no moderation by the journalist that would have saved the Senator Ozouf from humiliation. That he twice had to try and cut short the debate meant that he had run out of argument and was having to repeat old tropes. The performance was bullying and arrogant. Hoist with his own petard I would say.

Nick Le Cornuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14983215673635966459noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270985170721876.post-51443056632337795972013-05-06T17:08:47.798+00:002013-05-06T17:08:47.798+00:00On translation:

The judges , Renaud Van Ruymbeke and Roger Le Loire, responsible for the investigation of the former minister and deputy prosecutors have requested an extension of their investigations to any other holders of undeclared accounts in Switzerland.

The original French begins...

Translated as:

Dozens of French have settled in the island and live there all year round. I do not have exact figures on tax evaders. But as citizens of the world come to Jersey to escape the taxman why should there not French? Besides, if large French banks are present on site there must be a reason ..

Now he is saying that"If we look at the word used in the paper, it was ''évasion fiscale' which he translates as "tax avoidance"

In fact the word used above in the interview article is "évadés fiscaux" which translates as tax evaders. Having undeclared Swiss bank accounts (as the French story in Le Parisien makes clear) cannot be translated as "tax avoidance".

http://www.leparisien.fr/faits-divers/affaire-cahuzac-d-autres-evades-fiscaux-dans-le-collimateur-des-juges-26-04-2013-2761079.phpTonyTheProfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10486414706261508994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270985170721876.post-45207373912036222132013-05-06T08:14:56.676+00:002013-05-06T08:14:56.676+00:00Mike Dun writes; Huge international finance scanda...Mike Dun writes; Huge international finance scandals with a Jersey aspect are revealed with monotonous regularity. Collectively, these do more damage to Jersey's reputation (whatever that might be)than an article or two setting forth perfectly reasonable political views. The world-wide publicity that origated following the jailing of just one Jersey based accountant in Australia and now the search for his former Jersey partner hardly enhances Jersey's "reputation" either but are you suggesting that all Jersey based accountants should be banned?
Free speech and all that goes with it means that even those who do not share the Thatcherite, free market, user pays dream are allowed to express their views too.Tom Gruchyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01384387998228996741noreply@blogger.com
