The author's recounting of a bus ticket mishap adds a delightful touch of humor. The historical anecdote about Sweden experiencing a February 30th in 1712 adds an intriguing layer of factual curiosity. Shifting gears, the scrutiny of costs associated with changing department names and updating vehicle signage showcases a keen eye for detail. The discrepancy between the estimated cost provided in response to a Freedom of Information request and the practical estimate from an industry expert raises valid questions about the transparency and accuracy of such figures. I had read it during the holidays and when it was read in class we were asked what was the oddity...the high ranking girls were unable to answer when I timidly put up my hand to answer and the look of astonishment from the teacher and students when they heard my answer has stayed with me all these years...how could I have understood when the high rankers had no clue! Some companies even do modular builds so a bricklayer needs to lay less bricks to build a house."

That's true, but again it comes up again physical limits to how far this can go. Incidentally, as Ben Shenton observed, the States do wages weekly, which is highly inefficient.

"In terms of productivity, a hotel will be calculated as being more productive if it earns more money through say going up market."

That means raising prices and in the current economic climate, there are again restrictions - economic restrictions - on how far that will work. A hotel could price itself out of the market, especially in these days of cheaper flights to sunnier climes.

"Importing some labour will need to be part of the solution and with a birth rate will below the replacement ratio this can be done in a controlled way without necessarily being a Ponzi scheme."

Prior to Covid and Brexit, the rate of imported labour was far in excess of the birth rate being below replacement, which is why the population was growing so rapidly over the last 20 years. In effect, it was a Ponzi scheme. Politicians like Paul Routier even told me that we had to import staff purely to improve dependency ratios, and with no other real restrictions - that was Ponzi pure and simple. The net effect has been catastrophic, as no one seems to have linked an massive increase in population with an increased capacity in infrastructure - hence the issues about housing and sewage networks, as just one example.

Post-Brexit, the labour market has become incredibly difficult especially in areas like hospitality. The high cost of living - and housing - has also made Jersey increasingly unattractive. Unless you are a chief officer at a States Department, recruited over the heads of locals, and with a wonderful salary - again see Ben Shenton for details.TonyTheProfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10486414706261508994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270985170721876.post-50493696937274752312023-06-14T17:59:40.557+00:002023-06-14T17:59:40.557+00:00I'm not sure you've been fair here, what t...I'm not sure you've been fair here, what they're saying is for an economy to function, someone needs to do the work. If most people are too elderly to do that work the economy will decline (very simplified). This is bad for everyone because as workers decline and elderly people increase, our expenses will exceed our income.

You can import people to pick up the slack or increase productively (the workers generate more 'economic pie' to be shared around, or more simply do now with less).

In terms of productivity, a hotel will be calculated as being more productive if it earns more money through say going up market. The cleaners might do the same amount of work, but the organisation productively is higher because the output in cash terms is higher.

In a similar way its perfectly possible for a bricklayer to be more productive in a number of ways, with better inventory control, if say less bricks, which cost to buy and store, are held in unused stock, or they better manage down days due to bad weather or sickness, or if the company through technology spends less time doing their payroll. Some companies even do modular builds so a bricklayer needs to lay less bricks to build a house.

Now some work needs to be done locally, ie teacher, nurses, bricklayers, but since we import most of our goods, it doesn't matter that much that much of the value add is generated in cash terms rather than something more physical.

Now increasing productivity is hard, I don't know any ironclad way a government has achieved this, but unless we achieve it we're faced with a stark choice, accept declining standards of living, or import more working people.

They're right to raise this as an issue, importing some labour will need to be part of the solution and with a birth rate will below the replacement ratio this can be done in a controlled way without necessarily being a Ponzi scheme.Piglethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13362909274050747690noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270985170721876.post-43218411651041487682023-03-08T15:00:50.612+00:002023-03-08T15:00:50.612+00:00Excellent. I found this review after seeing him on "Quora", aggressively and compulsively posting much of the same drivel in an hostile-yet-proselytory manner, in several religion and spirituality threads unrelated to atheism. I started doing some research to find out who he is, and came across your review as the sole identifiable result not related to selling his book, or Facebook.

Your critique of his scholarship and attitude seem to be spot on and, as I can find no mention of him apart from a kindle-copy of what seems a self-published e-book with zero reviews and an invite to his Facebook page, I can only assume he created that tome as an online "textbook", and then lectured from it to his "students", whom he made purchase it for the class. Or used it in an online classroom as the text for the class, then simply made the students regurgitate what he saw as its most salient and, I'm sure, clever points.

I'll pause while the implications and ramifications of that scenario taking place, at this level of quality, in an institution of higher learning, stop making me dizzy. I thought about purchasing it, just out of morbid curiousity, but I spared myself the masochistic experience.

Perhaps his stridency is due to an unfulfillable desire for gravitas. Perhaps he truly believes that humanity, like every other animal in nature, would be "more advanced" without religion, and feels a personal responsibility to make that happen. Maybe he's mad that Santa didn't bring him a fire truck when he was five. I'll leave that to the psychologists. And the philosophers. If one reads his book, present company excluded.

But an academician of note and substance, he is not. And your review makes that perfectly clear.

All the best.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03684603773273484946noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270985170721876.post-59828427324762921822022-11-05T12:20:12.331+00:002022-11-05T12:20:12.331+00:00I found it here

This is because the name is not French, which the French recognize. The name 'Ecrehou' is Norse in origin. "Esker" as in Skerry meaning a stony bank, or an island, Maitre Ile, with rocks surrounding it and 'Hou', the toponym found also in Jethou, Lihou, Brecqhou, Burhou and other islets, derives from holm, meaning island. On early maps, described as Rochers d'Ecrehou. Sadly this historic Norse link has been lost in favour of adding the now commonplace incorrect "s" and even incorrect accents as in Les Écréhous, in local and social media. The usual Jersey anglicized assumption that all names following "Les" should be in the plural is completely incorrect, in this case.I was in contact with a learned French professor some years ago and he produced a paper confirming the correct name as Les Ecrehou. 25th Dragoonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14147944103628246125noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270985170721876.post-62218066688656927232022-07-22T16:52:21.582+00:002022-07-22T16:52:21.582+00:00Thank you for such an informative article. if you ...Thank you for such an informative article. if you want to see something similar check herewunmihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13515089104671255635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270985170721876.post-53110439023667658652022-06-30T10:09:32.168+00:002022-06-30T10:09:32.168+00:00If Deputies were called Senators would there still...If Deputies were called Senators would there still be a problem?Tom Gruchyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01384387998228996741noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270985170721876.post-65511201437228171612022-06-27T05:57:32.444+00:002022-06-27T05:57:32.444+00:00where does the Constables "party" featur...where does the Constables "party" feature in your analysis?Tom Gruchyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01384387998228996741noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9095270985170721876.post-5700056270022854682022-06-26T01:06:12.524+00:002022-06-26T01:06:12.524+00:00I am told that my ancestor is James Carteret.
