George W Bush, under fire from all sides of the political spectrum for his decision to send 21,500 extra troops to Iraq, has denied having a stubborn character. The president insisted that he is actually "flexible" and "open-minded", in a lengthy and candid interview with CBS, the American televison channel. He also told the 60 Minutes programme that he has a "thick hide", and denied that his spirits had suffered because of setbacks during the Iraq war. "I really am not the kind of guy that sits here and says, 'Oh, gosh, I'm worried about my legacy.' I'm more worried about making the right decisions to protect the United States of America," he said, according to a transcript of the interview released on Sunday.
