17.—Judgment given in the Rosehill case, which had occupied the attention of the Royal Court for nine days, this being in favour of the Harbours and Airport Committee. Rotary Club Christmas tree officially lighted in the Royal Square. Victoria College Dramatic Society presents “ Much Ado About Nothing” at College Hall as their Christmas play.

19.—Spectacular crash on Beaumont Hill when an ambulance proceeding to the scene of an accident bursts a tyre and crashes through granite wall into a meadow 10ft. below, the driver and bearer having remarkable escapes from serious injury.

20.—Official opening of new Catholic church at Gorey.

21—Inquest held on the body of Mrs. O. M. Dumosch found dead at her home, a verdict of death from alcoholic poisoning being recorded.

25.-—Christmas Day celebrated in the traditional manner, the weather being mild and dull. An outbreak of fire occurred at La Vallette Farm, St. Lawrence, severe damage to a cottage being caused.

26. Jersey Drag Hunt hold all-day meet, this being the longest for 50 years. Inquest held on the body of Denis Crenin, an Irish farm workerwhose body was found in Dannemarche Reservoir, the inquest being adjourned sine die. Jersey Green Room Club pantomime “Humpty Dumpty ” opens at The Forum.

28.—Two further inquests held, that on the body of Mrs. S. A. Nelson, a patient at St. Saviour's Hospital, who died following a fall from bed and in which a verdict in accordance with medical evidence was returned ; and on the body of Mrs. D. O. Gem, found hanging from a tree near Sunnyside, Longueville, a verdict of suicide being recorded.

29.—Presentations made to Mr. A. Manger, retiring Markets Inspector, by stallholders.

30.—For the first time for 50 years a shipment of cattle is made to Sweden, bacon pigs being imported in exchange.

1.—The long running Rosehill case (Messrs. J. W. Huelin Ltd, v. The Harbours Committee) re-opens before the Royal Court. Annual dinner of Island Centeniers, an innovation being the presence of ladies. Jersey Amateur Dramatic Club presents “ The Blue Goose ” at The Playhouse. His Excellency the Lt.-Governor makes first of two official tours of the harbours.

2.—Annual two-day winter exhibition of Jersey Cage Bird Society opens at Springfield.

6.—Warmest December day since records were kept 59 years ago, the shade reading being 60.6 degrees Fahrenheit.' [15.9C]

7.-—Outbreak of fire at Messrs. A. Amy and Son Ltd, 1 Queen Street, held in check by extinguishers pending arrival of the Brigade. An unoccupied cottage at Bel Royal Vineries, St. Peter’s Valley, gutted by fire. Jersey Teachers' Association diamond jubilee celebrated with a luncheon at which the N .U.T. general secretary was a guest. “ Satellite Story,” by the local playwright Anthony Booth, presented. at Springfield Theatre.

8.—St. Helier parish assembly recommends licences and decides that the painting in the Town Hall, “La Repasseuse,” by the French painter David, be sent to London for expert attention.

10. -Ceremony at Government Office, La Collette, medals being presented by His Excellency to four recipients. Mr. Basil Henriques C.B.E., London magistrate, speaks on youth clubs at reception by the Council of the Jersey Youth Movement at the Ritz Hotel. Rosehill case concludes before the Royal Court after nine-day hearing, judgment being reserved. Jersey College for Girls’ speech day and prize-giving

11.-—St. Clement’s parish meeting, the rate remaining unaltered at 1/6 after a suggestion by the Constable for an increase to 1/9. Dr. E. P. Marett re-elected president of the Jersey Dog Club, there being opposition for the first time for many years.

12.—Before the Full Court, David Halstead (32), a native of Lancashire, sentenced to 18 months’ hard labour for fraudulently obtaining sums of money from a “ Miss X.”. Annual general meeting of the R.J.A. and HS, Mr. Frs. Le Boutillier being elected president, defeating Capt. R. J. B. Bolitho by 168 votes to 130 ; Mr. Le Boutillier announced he would resign the vice-presidency of the States Committee of Agriculture. Weight-lifting contest between Jersey and French teams staged at The Playhouse.

13.—Two 500-year old skeletons found during reconstruction work on premises at 6 Bond Street, formerly the site of the Chapelle de la Madeleine.

15.——The 600 ton mv Brockley Combe, on passage from Guernsey to this Island, strikes rock off the Minquiers during the early hours, the maroons going off about 3.20 am and the St. Helier life-boat and States tender putting to sea immediately; the lifeboat bringing the crew reached St. Helier shortly before 1 pm. and the vessel became a total loss.

16.—-Christmas concert presented by the States Evening Institute choir at Jersey College for Girls.

17.—The International Court at The Hague gives judgment in the Minquiers—Ecréhous case, the judges deciding unanimously that sovereignty over the islets belonged exclusively to the United Kingdom.

18. —Inner Wheel charter anniversary dinner, the Lieut.-Governor and the Bailiff being guests. .

21.-—At today’s sitting of the Royal Court, Frederick Sleigh Roberts (38), of North Wales, described as an habitual criminal, was sentenced to 12 months’ hard labour for obtaining £222 by means of a forged cheque. Thick fog over the Island causes cancellation of all air services.

23.—Annual dinner of Old Victorians’ Association held at College Hall. Jersey Blind Society annual meeting at West Park Pavilion.

24.—His Excellency and Lady Nicholson pay official visit to the States Experimental Farm and later pay visit to a farm to see cider-making in progress.

25.—-Fourth Jersey Trades Exhibition at Springfield oflicially opened by His Excellency the Lieut-Governor.'

26. The States: Estimates for 1954 presented, these showing an estimated increase in revenue of £54,000 and an estimated. Decrease in expenditure of £57,000 ; this year’s surplus is listed as £350,000 ; before the Estimates were taken tributes were paid to H.M. Attorney-General for his part in the successful outcome of the Minquiers—Ecréhous case at The Hague and a resolution to this eflect passed unanimously; pertinent questions on the salary of the Public Health Engineer were asked and answered; milk subsidy figures were substantially reduced. 27. Debate on the Estimates concluded : The Housing Committee’s request for £150,000 and the Public Works item of £22,000 for fluorescent lighting along Victoria Avenue were deleted and the

Estimates finally adopted; the House then sat in camera, when a new States Treasurer was appointed, he being Mr. F. N. Padgham. Jersey’s traffic problems discussed by Debating Club.

28.—Before the Royal Court, sentence on Margaret Mary Vasse, charged with embezzlement, was deferred, whilst Ernest Wm. Cattell, charged with blackmail of the former accused, pleaded not guilty and was sent for trial before the January Assizes. Thieve raid stall at Trades Exhibition, articles of men’s wear being taken. Annual dinner of Jersey Swimming Club. Talk on religious teaching in schools given by Mr. A.C. F. Beales, of London University, at The Playhouse. Annual general meeting of Women’s Section of British Legion, Lady Nicholson becoming patroness.

30 Afternoon sitting of States, the greater part being taken up with housing and civil defence; the proposal to lend money to owners of property for repairs and alterations was withdrawn for the time being and an Act authorizing the Committee to build six terraced houses on Victoria Road site adopted. 1.—St. James's Boys’ Brigade hold’church parade in celebration of golden jubilee. a dinner being held on the Tuesday at which His Excellency and the Bailiff attended.

2.—Assizes : Raymond Critolph (22) and Peter Lorimer (28), both natives of Scotland, charged with the robbery of a. safe containing nearly £200 from Drivehire office in Broad Street, and with car “ borrowing ”; the case continued on the Tuesday, when the accused were found guilty, Critolph receiving 18 months’ hard labour and Lorrimer 15 months. Mishap to the Channel Coast at Ronez, a wire hawser fouling her propeller ; the States tug took the vessel in tow to Gorey Harbour, where the work of clearing the propeller was commensed, the vessel returning to Ronez the following day. First presentation of one-act plays at Eisteddfod.

4,—Society of Jersey Gardeners stage Chrysanthemum show at Springfield Lower Hall, many fine exhibits being on show.

7.—Elocutionary sessions of the Eisteddfod conclude at Springfield.

8.—Remembrance Sunday commemorated with the annual service at the Cenotaph.

9.—Hearing of blackmail charge opens at the Police Court when a 64 year-old man, Ernest William Cattell, is accused by Margaret Vasse (22), presented on a charge of embezzlement, with extorting sums of money from her by threats. Annual Festival of Remembrance by the British Legion held at The Forum. Dancing sessions of the Eisteddfod commence at Springfield. First shipment of live pigs to England for the Ministry of Food, 125 being shipped.

10.—Verdict of death from natural causes recorded at resumed inquest on the body of Mr. Peter Carry, the report of the official analyst proving negative.

11—Final contests of dancing sessions of Eisteddfod. His Excellency installed as honorary Rotarian at luncheon held at The Forum Café.

12.—First of the Eisteddfod festival concerts at Springfield. Jersey Dog Club hold sanction show at Mr. L. Bazire’s store.

13.—Shocking motor cycling tragedy occurs at Millbrook shortly after midnight, a young motor cyclist, Charles M. Amy (20) and his pillion passenger, Doreen Alma Marcel (19) being killed when the machine struck the kerb and crashed into a Wall. At the subsequent inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned, there being no evidence of excessive speed. Second festival concert of Eisteddfod, His Excellency the Lt.Govenor presenting the senior awards. Lady Nicholson presents Queen’s Guide Badges to two members of 1st Jersey (College) Company of Girl Guides. Jersey Debating Club motion “That an armed Germany is essential to Western defence “ carried by overwhelming majority.

14.—His Excellency takes part in practice run of Jersey life-boat Elizabeth Rippon. Final Eisteddfod concert at Springfield. Cow savaged by dog at St. Peter, the unfortunate animal having to be slaughtered. Annual dinner and prize giving of Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club.

15.—Old Boys of The Beeches and of St. Paul’s hold memorial services in honour of the fallen. New Era Cinema broken into during the afternoon, this following an entry into The Odeon on Friday night; in both cases the would-be thieves escaped.

19. Two road accidents, one with fatal consequence occur shortly after midnight on Saturday and within half a mile of each other- the first involving a young French motor cyclist, M. Yyes Moisan, who sustained fatal injuries when he crashed head-on into a car near Court Drive, Bel Royal; in the second instance a motorist crashed into a saloon near Victoria House, Victoria Avenue, the occupants of which, four French farm workers, received injuries of varying degrees; at the subsequent inquest held on the body of the motor cyclist a verdict of accidental death was recorded.

21. -Trafalgar Day Ball held at West Park Pavilion, His Excellency the Lt.-Governor and the Bailiff attending.

22.-Jersey Drag Hunt and Chase Club hold opening meet of the season at St. Ouen’s. Autumn field day of Victoria College C.C.F. at Les Blanches Banques.

25. Eisteddfod dedication service held at St. Saviour’s Parish Church, a large congregation. Attending. A special service for sportsmen, the first of its kind for many years, held at St. Matthew’s Church, Millbrook.

26. Opening session of the Eisteddfod at Springfield Theatre, this being for pianoforte playing.

27. Special sitting of States: The Vote for the construction of an annexe for Elizabeth House was approved; a long discussion ensued on the purchase of the former Lt.-Governor’s bungalow at St. Ouen’s Bay, which was eventually agreed to ; a protest from Roman 'Catholics alleging discourteous treatment by the Public Instruction Committee was read and referred to the Committee; a letter from the Jersey Communist Party re shortage of water at States housing estates was also referred to the appropriate Committee; a petition alleging injustice against the States presented by Mr. J. R. Starck was rejected ; the Act-Report on the Troglodyte housing scheme was withdrawn, as was also the one on wage-fixing machinery in agriculture ; an Act authorizing the sale by auction of Corbiére Pavilion Hotel was adopted and various other Reports and Acts adopted or lodged.

28. Lady Gresham Nicholson opens Arts and Crafts section of :Eisteddfod in the lower hall at Springfield.

29. Trinity parish rate remains at 2/4 per qtr. despite a £1,500 deficit in. the balance sheet. Annual meeting of Jersey branch of the British Legion, His Excellency the Lt.-Governor accepting patronage.

30.—Two inquests held at the General: Hospital, the first being that on the body of Mr. C. E. Regnault, victim of a recent burning accident at St. Martin’s, a verdict in accordance with medical evidence being recorded ; and on the body of Mr. P. M. Carry and which was adjourned for the Official Analyst’s report. Dr. Alain Bombard gives account of his dramatic voyage across the Atlantic in a rubber dinghy to members of Les Amitiés Franco-Britanniques; on the Saturday he spoke to 1,500 children at The Forum and in the evening to members of the Royal Channel. 1.—Exhibition of modern photography opened at the Barreau Art Gallery by the Earl of Jersey. Annual dinner and prize-giving of Jersey Sea Fishing Club. Memories of the Opera House as a “live " theatre recalled in BBC. broadcast on the Home Service.

2.—Three-parish autumn cattle show held at St. Ouen. Second inquest this week on a patient who died at the Hospital following an operation for removal of cataract, the deceased in. this case being Mr. J. M. Huet, aged 79,’ a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence being recorded.

3.-—Before the Royal Court to-day, Leonard Wm. Boddy (22) charged with the theft of. £120 from No. 1 Silvertide, Havre des Pas, is sentenced to nine months hard labour. Jersey Central A.B.C. defeats St. Servannais in. boxing tournament at Springfield.

6.—Before the Police Court four men charged with setting fire to a lorry on the beach were discharged, the police failing to prove their case. Appeal dismissed in the case Tunbridge v. States Housing Committee heard before the Full Court today. St. John and St. Lawrence autumn cattle show held at Midlands, St. Lawrence.

7. Inquest held at the General Hospital on one-year-old child who died whilst under operation, a post mortem revealing abnormal conditions of the glands, a verdict in accordance with this being returned. Trinity and St. Martin cattle Show.

8.--Autumn sitting of Assise d’Heritage held at the Royal Court, the customary guard of halberdiers being mounted. Verdict in accordance with medical evidence recorded at inquest held on the body of Mrs. Ellen Whiffen, who died following a. fall at her home. First of three-night presentations by the British and Foreign Bible Society. “150 Not Out,” staged at Springfield. St. Brelade’s cattle show held near Red Houses, Les Quennevais. Minquiers—Ecréhous case concludes at The Hague, judgment being reserved.

16. Gracie Fields flies to Jersey and is given big ovation at the Airport; on Thursday she appeared at a. midnight matinee concert given at The Forum in aid of the Battle of Britain Week, being acclaimed by the large audience. Mr. H. Ahier re-elected Constable of St. Martin.

17. Cardinal Griffin- the guest of honour at banquet given by the Roman Catholic clergy at the Merton Hotel. Hearing opens before the International Court of Justice at The Hague of the Minquiers-Ecréhous dispute, the British delegation being headed by Sir Lionel Heald (Britain's Attorney-General) and Mr. Cecil Harrison (Attorney-General for Jersey). In the final- of the CI Amateur (Close) Golf Championship, played at Grouville, D. Lowe (Guernsey) beat A. A. Collet (Jersey) by 6 and 5. Jersey Island Players present “ Dark Return ” at Springfield Theatre.

25.—-Inquest held on the body of Mr. L. A. Bryant, a visitor who collapsed while bathing at Gréve de Lecq, a verdict of death from drowning being returned. Judgment reserved in the case Convent F.C.J. v. the Public Health Committee heard before the Royal Court. Waterspout seen off Corbiére, this being followed by a cloudburst in the district.

26,—Arrival of the Rt. Rev. A. T. P. Williams, Lord Bishop of Winchester, on a first visit to the Island since his appointment to the see.

28.—Annual dinner of Jersey Rifle Association.

29.—Representative gathering of Island churchmen and women meet at West Park Pavilion to hear address by Dr. Williams, Bishop of Winchester.

SEPTEMBER

1.—Jersey beats Guernsey in vibrant junior and senior water-polo matches held at Havre des Pas Pool.

2—-St Aubin’s landslide discussed by the parish assembly, it being decided that the attendance of a legal adviser was necessary. Annual meeting of Jersey Sea Fishing Club. .

3.—Farewell dinner given by Jersey branch of Royal Engineers OCA to His Excellency the Lieut-Governor, to whom presentations were made. Final of the Jersey section of the CI. Amateur (Close) Golf Championship played at Grenville, A. A. Collet (R.J.G.C.) beating E. W. Hebert (J.E.G.C.) by 3 up and 2 to play. Horse show, gymkhana and fete held at St. Ouen.

5. Farewell presentations made to His Excellency by the Boy Scouts’ Association at camp-fire held in a field below Government House.Band of the Royal Marines (Portsmouth Division) begin their week of concerts under the aegis of the Tourism Committee.

7.—Bailiff heads local delegation which travelled to St. Brieuc over the week-end to attend the annual exhibition. A number of road accidents reported during the week-end, the most serious being a car crash on Victoria Avenue in which the driver sustained multiple head injuries. Last of the season’s “ live ” variety shows presented at The Forum. Furze fire occurs in St. Peter’s Valley, a large area of cotils being burnt out.

8.—Inquest held on the body of Mr. G. V. Houguez, found shot in a loft at his residence, Rockstone, St. Martin, a, verdict of suicide being recorded. The 10-ton auxiliary cutter Illawara runs on to rock off Gorey but is later refloated and towed into Gorey Harbour. Guest speaker Mr. R. P. Biddle addresses Round Tablers on “The Docks at Southampton.”

9. Inquiry held into the death of a visitor from Canada, Mr Harold Boot, who died whilst on the operating table at the General Hospital, a verdict in accordance with medical evidence being returned. St. Brelade's parish assembly again discuss the St. Aubin landslide, it being decided to repair the High Street and to accept the offer of land.

10. His Excellency Sir Edward Grasett, K.B.E., C.B., D.S.O., M.C. relinquishes his office as Lieut. Governor and in- a. moving ceremony in the Royal Square takes leave of Island officials and representatives of various public bodies, later leaving for the Airport for his departure by air.—J.M.C. and L.C.C . 50-mile sand race meeting held at St. Ouen, the event being won by M. Daghorn.

11. Large crowd attend final concert given by band of the Royal Marines.

12. Three-month-old baby, twin daughter of Mrs. B. Costard, of Trinity Road, found dead in her pram, a. verdict of death from suffocation being recorded at the subsequent inquest.

Special sitting of States: Fire Brigade to move to Town Arsenal, £16,470 being voted for conversion of the building; the gift of £150,000 by the Island to the Home Government was acknowledged ; new proposals on the C.I. Court of Appeal from the Home Office were submitted and referred to a special committee ; a request for £22,000 for the lighting of Victoria Avenue was refused ; a credit vote of £50,000 for the construction of a. new eastern telephone exchange was agreed to, as was a £40,000 vote for housing and £17,560 for Airport alterations and £9,500 for the enlargement of Elizabeth House; extensions and improvements to Brighton Road School totalling £39,000 was voted ; various other matters of a. 21.-—Visite Royale takes place at St. Ouen, the route selected being traversed by cars. Second professional boxing tournament staged in the open air at Springfield.

22.-—Parochial rate at St. Brelade increased to 2/6, this being due to heavy commitments for the St. Aubin’s landslide. Jersey Swimming Club hold floodlit gala and championship races at the Pool.

23.—-British Hill Climb Championship held at Bouley Bay, Ken Wharton winning for the fourth year in succession. St. Helier School‘s first prize-giving takes place at the Town Hall.

24. Conclusion of St. Helier Yacht Club two-day regatta held in St. Aubin’s Bay ; the race from St. Helier’s Harbour to Chausey was held on Saturday and was won by Taquah (R. Hughes).

25.—Before the Full Court to-day the appeal of Mr. J. A. Parr against his conviction on a dangerous driving charge by the Police Court Magistrate was allowed. Mr T. G. Le Marinel, Constable of St. John, accedes to request of influential deputation to stand for the election for Senator. Narrow escape of two visiting Scouts from drowning at St. Brelade’s, members of the Penguin Club, London, bringing the lads ashore. Victoria College swimming sports held at the Pool, Dunlop winning the senior cup. New relief telephone exchange at the Lyric Hall comes into operation.

26. St. John Ambulance inspection, at Springfield, this having to take place indoors owing to inclement weather.

27. Judging of the hotels and guest houses display competition in connection with the Battle of Flowers, the premier award going to Old Portelet Inn. Serious accident occurs at Millbrook, a ganger on the drainage scheme, Mr. Thomas Lee, being run over by a heavy lorry and sustaining multiple injuries. Prize day at Victoria College, the summer concert being held in the evening.

28.—Second and last of the Visites Royale takes place at St. Clement, Roads Inspectors for the Samarés Vingtaine being fined for neglect of duties. The cross-bay swim (from St. Helier Harbour to St, Aubins) won by the English international water polo player R. Turner, who covered the 3 1/2-mile course in 1 hr. 54 m. 1 s.; the ladies’ race was won by 17-year-old Germaine Vautier in 2 h. 38m. 6 s. Judging of the shop Window display competition, Messrs. Jax, of Queen Street, and Doreen Wieland, of Bath Street, taking the principal prizes.

29,—St. Martin’s parish rate reduced from 2/6 to 2/3 per qr. Hampstead Harriers defeat Jersey Athletic Club by 36 points to 30 in meeting at F.B. Fields.

30.—-Jersey’s Battle of Flowers held in grand weather, the attendance being estimated at 40,000 ; St. Saviour’s exhibit again won the 'prix d’honneur ; a big attraction was the band of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders; the day concluded with an evening fete and a floral ball at West Park Pavilion.

1.  St. Brelade’s parish assembly approves plans for repairs to the .St. Aubin’s landslide, these to cost £3,515. Jersey College for Girls’ inter-house swimming sports held at Havre des Pas Pool.

 

2.—Nursing Association holds fete at St. Ouen’s Manor, dismal weather conditions somewhat spoiling this event ; at Springfield the annual sports and gymkhana staged by The Beeches took place,  whilst at Blanches Banques-the third of the Jersey Motor Cycle and Light Car Club’s scrambles was held.

 

3.—Jersey Swimming Club defeated by Cambridge University in swimming match held under flood-lights at the Bathing Pool. St. Mary’s parish assembly decides that the rate remain as last year, i.e. 2/3 per quarter.

 

4. A young French cyclist, 22-year-old Jean Jézéquel, killed outright when his cycle collides with a car on Samarés Inner Road ; a “verdict of accidental death was subsequently recorded at the inquest. Miss Treena van Doorne chosen as “ Miss Jersey Battle of Flowers” in competition staged at the Odeon Cinema.

 

6.—The first sea bathing tragedy of the season occurs at Portelet, the victim being 32-year-old Mr. D. H. E. Dowling; a verdict of accidental drowning was recorded at the. subsequent inquest.

 

7.—-Professional boxing tournament held at Springfield, a crowd of about 1,000 attending.

 

8.-—-Jersey committee of the British Empire Cancer Campaign formed following special meeting of representatives of local associations. Col. A. S. Turnham, CBE, Military Knight of Windsor addresses Rotarians in connection with the British Empire Cancer Campaign.

 

9.—Coronation Air Display at the Airport thrills 30,000 spectators, aerobatics by French airmen being a highlight of the show; an innovation was the arrival of His Excellency the Lt.-Governor by helicopter from Government House. .

 

10.——Inquest opened on the body of Mrs. Ada Le Boutillier, the  octogenarian whose burial was stopped the previous day ; following ; evidence given by the Hospital doctor a verdict of death from pneumonia following a fracture of the femur was returned. First annual  swimming gala of St. Helier School.

 

11.—-At the Royal Court today the companies concerned in the recent agreement on licensed house monopolies announced that the agreements had been cancelled. Regimental band of the Royal Inniskillings commence series of concerts at the Parade Gardens and Howard Davis Park. Verdict of accidental death returned at the inquest held on the body of Mr. Cecil Bernard Fisher, a visitor, who fell from a window at Seabright, Gorey, whilst sleep-walking. Before the Full Court today Mr. G. I. E. Gruchy was admitted a member of the local Bar. A 30-ft. speedboat bound from Guernsey to this Island breaks down off Corbiere, a timely rescue being made by the auxiliary cutter Girl Joyce.

 

13.-—At the Assizes today, David Jack Proper, charged with manslaughter in connection with the recent motor cycling accident on St. Aubin’s Road was unanimously found not guilty and discharged; this was the only case before the Court. .

 

14.—Le Quatorze Juillet celebrated by the French colony in the Island, a reception being held at the French Consulate. Two records broken at J.A.C. championship meeting held at the FB. Fields.

 

15.—Centenier J. N. Germain returned unopposed as Deputy for St. Martin at meeting of electors—Parish of St. John decides on dust collection service, thus rescinding the voluntary collection at 6d. per bin. St. Ouen’s parish rate to remain as last year, i.e., 2/6. Girls ’Life Brigade hold farewell “at home” for their president, Lady Grasett. Swimming section of J.S.S A. hold annual gala at the Pool.

13.—Sand race meeting at St. Ouen’s Bay, thrilling sport being seen.

19.—Licensing Assembly discusses monopoly agreements between brewery companies and wine merchants, commenting that restrictive practices were not in the public interest.

20.—Shocking road fatality occurs at St. Peter’s, a young motor cyclist. Mr. Stanley Le Marquand (21), being killed when his machine crashed into a lorry, the victim striking his head against a, milestone in the hedge ; two pillion riders, including one travelling on the dead man’s machine and the other on another machine involved, were injured ; a stationary delivery van was also involved in the accident ; at the subsequent inquest a verdict of death from injuries received was returned. Return inter-college match at the College Field ends in a draw. Over 100 deck chairs destroyed in flames on St. Brelade’s beach.

21. Annual handicap yacht race from St. Helier to Gorey won by Onyx (B. Morton). Annual church parade of members of St. John Ambulance Brigade. Heaviest rainfall for weeks, nearly .75 in. Being recorded.

23. There was a sequel to the recent motor cycling fatality at St. Peter‘s when Jean Ange Gouédard (20) was charged before the Police Court with dangerous riding.

24. Following complaints by residents of the district a pack of 18 dogs at Les Platons, Trinity, were rounded up and destroyed.

25. Record attendence at Gorey Coronation Regatta, but lack of wind spoiled the sailing events and thick fog the fireworks display in the evening. Town schools’ sports held at the FB. Fields, Halkett

Place retaining the Darby-Wade Trophy ; the country schools held theirs the following day, La Moye and St. Peter's winning trophies.

29. This week-end the busiest to date this year, nearly 9,500 passengers arriving and departing .by sea ; at the Airport on Saturday there were 250 movements, involving 3,421 passengers. 30.—Special sitting of States discusses the appointment of directors of the Jersey Electricity Company., Deputies Candlin, Le Marquamd, Rumfitt and Senator Le Quesne eventually being appointed ; approval was given for the erection of 27 houses by the Midland Bank on the Headlands Estate, Corbiere; various minor matters were also dealt with. Constable of St. Peter’s unveils plaque commemorating the restoration of the ancient field-piece at the junction of New and Old Beaumont Hills. Jean Ange Gouédard, charged before the Police Court with dangerous riding in connection with the recent motor cycling fatality at St. Peter’s, is fined £10 and his licence suspended for nine months.

1.—Coronation Cavalcade opens at The Forum, Evelyn Laye and Leslie Sarony topping the bill.

2.—Coronation Day a memorable one in Jersey : The morning celebrations began with: a. parade through the town by the band of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps ; in the afternoon an Elizabethan fete was staged in the Howard Davis Park, Whilst in the evening a fine cavalcade paraded the town, the theme being mainly historical ; the day concluded with a grand display of fireworks from the Albert Pier at 10.30; most of the principal streets had been decorated and presented a magnificent appearance; the parochial authorities had arranged teas and games for the youngsters at various locales and these were much enjoyed; the weather was fine, though a cold wind prevailed. ’

4. An unusual “seller” on the ’Bridge- this morning was the Rector of Trinity, who having received some 40 barrels of potatoes in aid of the church restoration fund, sold these- at 4/’— above- the ruling figure. Inquest opened and adjourned on the body of 74-year-old Mr. T. R. Gibbs, who died- following a motor cycling accident at First Tower. J.MC. and L.C.C. second scramble of season held at Blanches Banques.

5.—The Coronation arch near the Town. Hall, erected by the parish, suddenly catches fire- and is largely destroyed.

6.—Central A.B.C. beat St. Servan in tournament held at Springfield. .

7.—Annual Corpus Christi procession through the streets of St. Helier.

8:—Before the Police Court today David Jack Proper (20) was charged with the manslaughter of Thomas Richard Gibbs, who died from injuries received after being knocked down by a motor cycle ridden by the accused, who was remanded on bail. Two robberies reported over the week-end, one at First Tower involving nearly £60 in cash and the other at the Gunsite Café, Beaumont, where only a few shillings and chocolate were taken;

9.—Special sitting of States unanimously votes £150,000 as Jersey’s contribution to Britain’s defence effort ; the sum of £30,000 was granted the Housing Committee for the construction of States houses at the Troglodyte Caves, Five Oaks; £1,000 was also granted the Beautés Naturelles Committee for the provision of a suitable dumping site: new rates at the institutions were agreed upon ; the free import of eggs was permitted. A stoppage of work occurred at the Ann Street Brewery at midday, but at 2.30 the men returned, the company having agreed to their demands. At the Jersey College for Girls, Miss E. G. Barton, former headmistress, unveils teak bench in commemoration of the Coronation.

11.—Verdict of accidental death recorded an; inquest held on the body of Mr. Richard Sagar, who died from injuries received through a fall into a soakaway on which he was working at his property, Isla Villa, Five Oaks. Government House levé in honour of the birthday of Her Majesty, the weather being ideal for the occasion. R.J.A. and HS. flower show held in Howard Davis Park.

12.Serious accident occurs at the Gas Works, an oil drum which was being cut exploding and causing multiple injuries to Mr. Harold Marie, an employee. The Rev. T. E. Fowler instituted as Incumbent .of St. Paul's Church.

13.—Serious motor cycling accident at St. Ouen’s, 29-year-old Mr. Frank Carré (who was to have emigrated to new Zealand shortly) sustaining a fractured spine when his machine overturns.

14. Underwater Fishing Club commences activities, thirty members “diving ” at Beauport.

15. Large audience at Springfield Theatre when the Elizabethan Singers, with Denis Matthews (pianist) give enjoyable concert. Victoria College defeats Forest School by 36 runs in match played at College Field. .

16.—Before the Full Court to-day, Peter Trevor Shipley Fowler, charged with theft and conversion, is sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. Crowd of 3,000 spectators see Lincoln City defeat the Saturday Football League- 1-0 at Springfield.

17.—Open-air service held at Springfield in connection with Empire Youth Sunday, His Excellency taking the salute.

19.—Special sitting of States discusses the electricity report, there being strong criticism of the company’s administration; eventually an amendment by Deputy C. Le Marquand charging the Finance Committee to review the present composition of the board of directors was carried by 39 votes to 9; it was announced that the Coronation Gardens at Millbrook would be handed over to the Island together with a sum of £7,500 for its maintenance; the Finance Committee replied to the recent petition of the Electrical Traders’ Association ; a number of questions on the drainage scheme were put and answered and a number of minor matters dealt with or lodged. Inquest opened and adjourned for further inquiries on the skeleton found on the Cotil a Geon, St. Peter’s, believed to be that of a French farm labourer missing since September 14th, 1946.

21—Island spring cattle show held at Springfield. Mr. J. C. Du Feu's aged cow Victor’s Desdemona winning the senior championship : in the evening the annual R.J.A. and HS. dinner was held at the Merton Hotel.

23.—Before the Full Court today Mr. P. A. H. Valpy was sworn in as advocate. Honfleur A.B.C. beat St. Helier boxers in tournament at Springfield which was marred by many delays.

24.—The first visiting band of the season, the famous Black Dyke Mills, gives opening performances over the week-end at Government House, Howard Davis Park and The Parade.

25.—Ideal weather attends the holiday, beaches and parks being crowded ; 3,309 passengers arrived by air over the three days Saturday to Monday while 1,500 came by sea; the J.M.C. and L.C.C. staged a hill climb at Bouley Bay ; a number of motoring accidents were recorded, one of a serious nature; a busy week-end was experienced on the potato market, supply and demand both being good.

26.—Victoria College Cadet Force ceremonial parade held at College Field, His Excellency inspecting the contingent. Serious motor cycling accident near Rozel Manor, a mother and three young children being run into by the motor cyclist, the mother and one child was injured, the others suffering from shock.

27.—Les Creux Cottage, a bungalow overlooking St. Brelade’s Bay, gutted by fire in the absence of its occupants.

30.—Jersey Chamber of Commerce annual general meeting, it being announced that expenditure exceeded income in a heavy year.

Ouen, weather conditions somewhat marring the event. Annual meeting of J.S.P.C.A., an overdraft of nearly £3,000 being shown.

2.—Verdict of suicide recorded at inquest held on the body of 63 year-old Mr. E. E. Millow, found with his throat cut at his residence in New Street.

3.—Outbreak of fire at Messrs. Le Riché’s Stores, Colomberie, a quantity of stock being destroyed.

4.—Two spring cattle shows, that of St. Helier Agricultural Society at Springfield and St. Clement's at Samares Manor.

5.—Jersey Gleemen hold annual spring concert at The Plaza Ballroom, the guest artiste being Ada Alsop. First annual meeting of the Sub-Aqua Club of Jersey. St John and St. Lawrence combined cattle show held at Midlands, St. Lawrence. ,

6.—Trinity and St. Martin cattle show, this taking place near Bouley Bay.

7.—A case of anthrax reported at Mr. C. Le Gallais‘s farm, Roselands, St. Saviour. Biggest number of entries for 24 years at St. Brelade’s cattle show, held near the Red Houses. '

8.—H.E. the Lieut-Governor attends final rendezvous of season of the British Legion.

9.—Island Thanksgiving service held in the Howard Davis Park on the occasion of Liberation Day anniversary; in the afternoon the Island team played the British Army XI at Springfield, the score being 3-2 in favour of the Island; at Blanches Banques the J.M.C. and L.C.C. staged a motor cycle scramble.

11.—The States Fire Service experience a busy weekend, being called upon to deal with a blazing yacht in St. Helier Harbour and to a serious outbreak in a garage at St. Clement’s in which was stored some 300 to 400 tons of waste paper; in. addition there were three furze fires, including a fairly severe outbreak on Ouaisné Common. Inquest opened and adjourned sine die on the body found on the beach at La Rocque and thought to be that of a Frenchman. Jersey Green Room Club present “1066—And All That” at Springfield Theatre. Sitting of Ecclesiastical Court grants facilities to Trinity Church and St. Luke’s; church officers were also sworn in.

12,—Verdict of suicide returned at inquest on the body of Mrs. I. G. Kent, a. patient at St. Saviour’s Hospital, who was found hanged in her room. St. Saviour and Grouville cattle show takes place in glorious weather, the beater being seen on this occasion.

13.—St. Helier parish assembly discusses derelict sites in the town; it was decided to negotiate on the one at Devonshire Place, while the Colomberie question was referred to the States; a subcommittee was set up to go into the question of translating and adding to the inscription on the Le Sueur Monument.

14.—The Lord Bishop of Southampton consecrates new cemetery at St. Martin’s and Macpela at St. John’s.

15.—At the Hospital Chapel,.the Bishop of Southampton dedicated a lectern, altar and ornaments, H.E. the Lieut.-Governor and the Bailiff being present.

16.—Annual meeting of Royal Empire Society, Major-General G. K. Bourne giving a talk on “ Berlin and the Soviet Zone”. Beeches O.B. draw with Guernsey Rangers in Guernsey in Jeremie Cup Competition, the game running to extra time.

18.—Jersey Motor Traders annual dinner. Amateur boxing tournament held at Springfield, St. Helier A.B.A. winning return match against Southampton. HE the Lt.Governor and Lady Grasett guests at Royal Artillery Association dinner ; the Dorset Regiment Association also held their annual dinner.

21.—St. John’s parish decides in favour of refuse collection, this to be at the rate of so much per bin.

22.—The Rev. R. S. Dabbs instituted as Rector of Grouville by the Very Rev. the Dean.

23.—British Legion hold St. George’s Day supper, gold badges being presented to Capt. W. Picot and Major C. P. Rumfitt for services rendered. Beeches OB. defeat Guernsey Northerners in Upton Park Cup game at Springfield, a crowd of over 7,000 attending.

24 —Three-parish bull show, the first of the season, held at Les Puits de Léoville, St. Ouen.

25—Annual dinner of Jersey Chamber of Commerce, the chief executive of B.E.A., Mr. Peter Masefield, being the principal guest.

26—His Excellency the Lt. Governor inspects companies of the Boys’ Brigade in the grounds of Government Office, South Hill, afterwards attending the annual service organized by the Boy Scouts’ Association held in the Howard Davis Park. Final performance given by Gorey Cinema, it being announced that it was no longer economic to run.

28. -Special sitting of States, when a statement on the importation of French eggs was made by the president of the Essential Commodities Committee ; a proposal for the survey of the organization and methods of the Civil Service was rejected ; a petition from the electrical traders of the Island was presented and ordered to be cyclostyled: a long discussion ensued on the Beautés Naturelles Committee's recommendations in regard to four sites, eventually all being approved. Round Tablers’ annual dinner and installation of new president.“ Victoria Regina ” presented at Springfield by Daryl Querée and Donald Rennolds. ‘

29.—American speaker at Rotary luncheon gives details of the working of the Mutual Security Agency. 

30.——States Preliminary discussion on the affairs of the, Jersey Electricity Co. Ltd., the matter being deferred for a full-dress debate ; the president of the Defence Committee replied to questions about the recent police car crash at Beaumont ; Senator Richardson was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Housing Committee. Constable of St. Helier opens bowling green of St. Clement's Bowling Club—Jersey. Dog Club spring show held at Springfield. Jersey defeats Guernsey 2-0 in Muratti.

April 1953 - Part 1

1.—Annual meeting of Men of the Trees—Dr. Whang Kyung Koh, MA. PhD, gives lecture to local branch of the United Nations Association.

3.—-Inter-county netball tournament opens at Sun Works sports ground, 186 players representing 20 English counties taking part. .Jersev Football League defeats Leyton 4-0 at Springfield. Services were held at the various churches and at the Odeon a religious film was screened ; the weather was fair. .

4.—Inter-county netball tournament ends, Surrey again taking the championship.

6.—The weather was rough and cold over the week-end, this compelling liberty men from H.M.S. Trafalgar to spend the week-end ashore, while local residents visiting the destroyer were forced to spend from 24 to 36 hours abroard. Several thousand spectators attended the point-to-point meeting held at Val de la. Mare, St. Peter, while splendid racing was seen at the first sand meeting staged by the J.M.C. and L.C.C. at St. Ouen’s Bay; the J.R.A. won their annual match against the N.R.A, at Crabbe; .at Springfield an Island XI lost 2—1 against Woking F.C. ; the Jersey Athletic Club’s road race was won by Ilford A.C.; the Jersey Green Room Club staged two Gilbert and Sullivan. operas at Springfield Theatre, viz.,“Trial by Jury ” and “H.M.S. Pinafore.”

7.—States: The Reformation of the Militia resolution presented by the Deputy of .St. Ouen was rejected by 43—8 ; £5,000 was voted to the King George VI Memorial Fund and £7,013 to the Flood Fund, thus bringing the Island’s contribution to £20,000 ; a statement was made on the importation of eggs from the Continent ; insurance for accident liability at the Airport was increased ; it was announced that no television service to the Island would be possible at the present ; a Bill was adopted making the parish of residence responsible in necessitous cases.

8.—St. John’s parish assembly appoint committee to go into the question of refuse collection. At St. Saviour’s the assembly voted £450 for expenses in connection with the Coronation celebrations.

9.—States : A Bill revising procedure in the acquisition of land by compulsory purchase adopted ; the Bill amending the Public Finances Law was approved by a large majority ; this was the last sitting of the session. Pony Club hunter trials held at Les Ruettes Farm, St. John. Jersey Juniors defeat Guernsey counterparts at Springfield, 5—1.; in Guernsey the schools-boys’ “Star ” Trophy game was drawn. St. John Ambulance Brigade competitions staged at West Park Pavilion.

10.—Probate Division of the Royal Court gives leave to presume death in the case of Mr. L. E. E. Courval, who disappeared when he fell overboard from the auxiliary sloop Manalla in St. Aubin’s Bay on Friday, March 13th. No fewer than 19 persons are charged before the Police Court with having no licence for their wireless set, fines being imposed in all cases. Brig-y-don Bal Masque held at West Park Pavilion. 13.—An Order of Justice in which the proprietors of the Convent F.C.J. actions the Public Health Committee for the sum of £1,800 cost of repairs and £400 costs by reason of damage caused by drainage work in Val Plaisant came before the Royal Court today, the hearing being adjourned until April 25th. Unusual accident at St. Aubin’s Harbour, a, saloon car toppling over the quayside and crushing a sailing dinghy on the sea bed below. Scottish Society of Jersey Silver Jubilee dance held at West Park Pavilion, pipers of the London Scottish attending.

14.-—St. Helier’s parish assembly discusses road widening schemes, that of Conway Street being rejected and the Tower Road one adopted. Inquest held on the body of 16-year-old Anthony Joseph Corbet, who was found hanging from a beam at the Promenade Café, Havre des Pas, on Saturday; the inquiry was adjourned for a post ,mortem; a verdict of suicide was subsequently recorded. Island billiards championship won by D. P. Dorleans (holder), who defeated AG. L. Borny 750—639.

16.—Youth Week opens, His Excellency speaking at the inauguration ceremony at Springfield Theatre. Annual meeting of Association of Old Victorians.

17.—-States: Hospital charges debate continued, no vote being taken on Deputy Venables’s proposal; regulations governing the export of potatoes and tomatoes were submitted and approved; authority was given for the raising of loans not exceeding £1,750,000 for the drainage scheme ; a number of triennial regulations were renewed.

18.—Jersey’s response to the Flood Distress Fund culminates in a cheque for £12,500 being sent to the Lord Mayor of London. At the Adastral Club Air Vice, Marshal Sir Geofirey Bromert, national vice-president of the R..A.F.A., unveils photographs connected with the club; in the evening Sir Geoffrey was guest at the annual dinner. Concluding afternoon of Victoria College Preparatory athletic sports. Centenier J. H. Chevalier elected Constable of St. Brelade.

19—States: Deputy Venables’s proposition that a Central Advisory Committee be formed rejected by an overwhelming majority ; regulations regarding infectious diseases in animals were renewed. Three records broken at Victoria College sports. Jersey Badminton Association annual tournament opens. Lieut-Governor receives amounts collected by Boy Scouts in aid of flood disaster victims, the ceremony taking place at Glenham Hall.

20.—At today’s sitting of the Licensing Bench the Attorney General made an important statement on restrictive agreements concerning licensed premises, and the Bench expressed disapproval of the brewery and wine merchants’ agreement. Hautlieu School produces their first play, “The Insect Play." Final adjudications at Youth Week festival at Springfield.

21.—The drought continues, a month having passed without rain.

22.—Unveiling and dedication of additional plaque to the parish war .memorial at St. Ouen.

24.—States : Before the Budget was presented regulations in regard to the sale of houses were brought forward and adopted after H.M. Attorney-General had spoken on the subject; the Island Budget presented by Senator Edwards, showed a substantial surplus of £573,370, but it was pointed out that revenue was dropping and expenditure increasing; consideration of extraordinary expenditure followed and the. House rose at 5 pm. Annual meeting of Jersey District Nursing Association. Island Players present “Treasure Hunt ” at Springfield Theatre. Jersey Young Farmers’ Club hold annual dinner, nearly 300 attending.

25.—A verdict of accidental death returned at the inquest held .on 19-year-old John Le C. Richardson, of Ebenezer Farm, Trinity, who died the previous day from injuries received when he slipped from a liquid manure cart on to a concrete platform below. Jersey Sea Cadet Corps annual inspection held at TSS Undaunted, Fort Regent; the annual meeting of the Navy League (local branch) was held at Wests Ballroom, when Admiral Sir Louis Hamilton; chairman of the Navy League Council, presented awards to the cadets.

25.—States: House pays tribute to the late Queen Mary, it being decided that a memorial service be held at St. Helier’s Parish Church and that a wreath be sent ; the debate on the Budget was continued and various other amendments and regulations adopted. Jersey defeats Alderney 4—0 in Muratti semi-final at Springfield. Victoria College defeats Jersey Athletic Club by 60 points to 43 in annual match held at College Field.

23. Inquest held on the body of Mrs. M. Hind, of Longueville Court, Bagot, who was found suffering from coal gas poisoning at her residence, a verdict that deceased died from coal gas poisoning while the balance of the mind was disturbed being recorded. Elizabeth College regain Hutchence Cup in inter-college athletics meeting at College Field. Jersey retains C.I. Billiards Trophy in annual match held in Guernsey.

30.—Master Butchers’ Association hold annual dinner, principal guest being Mr. G. Squire, president of the National Federation of Meat Traders.

March 1953 - Part 1

1.—Jersey Sea. Fishing Club hold competition on New North Quay, more than 199 lbs. of grasdos being caught. .

3.—Tragic death of local resident, Mr. E. M. Anquetil, who collapsed and died at; the wheel of his car while driving in Francis Street. Green Room Club present “ Little Lambs Eat Ivy ” at Springfield Theatre.

4—Dense fog holds up shipping, to day’s mailboat not arriving until the. following day..

5,—Tree-planting ceremony carried out by Men of the Trees at Victoria College to commemorate Coronation year. Jersey Dog Club hold successful sanction show.

6.——His Excellency the Lieut. Governor presents long service and good conduct medals to members of the Police Force at ceremony held at Police Headquarters, Rouge Bouillon.

7,—Riding fatality occurs at St“ Peter, Miss Sheelagh Jones (19), being thrown from her horse while riding in a field near the Airport; and sustaining injuries from which she died later; at the subsequent inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned.

9.—--Mr. D. P. Norman elected Jurat at sitting of Electoral College, he receiving 40 votes against 17 for Mr. H. A. Hamon and 13 for Lt. Col. W. Huelin. The Denville Players open season with “Widows are Dangerous ” at The Playhouse.

10.—States: Recommendation-s for the slaughter locally of aged horses were approved; the Tourism Committee asked that the wine merchants and brewery agreement be dealt with by the Licensing Assembly ; the Entertaimnents Tax was revised : it was announced that the Rehabilitation Committee would be wound up on June 30th ; an Act of the Housing Committee asking for permission to build on; the old railway station site at Gréve d'Azette was approved ; Coronation Day was declared a, public holiday ; various other Acts and amendments were tabled. Vestry screen at St. Clement’s Parish Church in memory of Commander E. O. Obbard dedicated by the Very Rev. the Dean. Annual dinner and dance of Jersey Motor Cycle and Light Car Club.

11.—Licensed Victuallers’ Association hold annual banquet at Merton Hotel—Jersey Rotary Club hear Sir Daniel Cabot speak on the menace of foot-and-mouth disease.

12.—States : A long and interesting debate took place on Hospital charges, Deputy Venables submitting a proposition that the rates bereduced; the discussion was adjourned; a date was fixed for discussion of the Deputy of St. Ouen’s Militia Bill. Victoria College C.C.F. hold field day in St. Ouen’s Bay. Rotary Club holds ladies night at Merton Hotel.

13. Mr. Jack Courval, well-known local fisherman, drowned in St. Aubin’s Bay when struck by the boom of the yacht Manella and swept overboard. At the Royal Court to-day judgment was given for plaintiff in the rate appeal case Buesnel v. Parish of St. John Assessment Committee. Grave concern expressed at increased Hospital charges at meeting of St. Helier parish assembly, the Constable stating it would entail 5d. additional rate. Centenier J. H. Chevalier accepts nomination for Constableship of St. Brelade at meeting of electors at the Parish Hall.

14 An employee of the Gas Company, Mr. Albert E. Brown, collapses in trench at a, building site at Millbrook and dies later in hospital; at the subsequent inquest a verdict of death from natural causes was recorded. At a sitting of the Full Court, Mr. D. P. Norman was sworn in as Jurat. St. Lo boxers lose to the Central A.B.C. in tournament held at Springfield.

18.—Roya1 Netherlands Air Force Dakota lands at Airport and leaves with second consignment of clothing for flood victims. Annual general meeting of Mechanics’ Institute.

19.—States : Senator Philip Le Feuvre appointed to the presidency of the new Defence Committee ; the new Beautés Naturelles Committee was also named ; a proposal by Senator J. J. Le Marquand to alter the present system of election of Jurats was rejected by 32—17 ; the Control of Civil Service Report was adopted without division ; objections were raised to the regulations to permit the Sunday opening of shops and the debate was adjourned. Serious farm fire at The Poplars, St. John, the outbuildings being destroyed; arson was suspected as two masked men were seen on the premises just before the outbreak.

20.—Verdict of death caused by drowning recorded at inquest held 'on the body of 83-year-old Mrs. V. P. L. Renault, whose body was found in a muddy pool near her residence, Meadow View, St. Saviour.

21.—-Full Court sits to admit Mr. L. M. Gould as a member of the local Bar. Annual dinner of St. Brelade’s Honorary Police. Channel Islands boxing championships held at Springfield, Jersey winning the Cleveland Trophy.

23. Amateur Dramatic Club present “The Rivals” at The Playhouse.

24.—States: The Sunday Trading Regulations presented by the Tourism Committee and due for debate today were withdrawn; various. measures for the control of infectious diseases in animals were approved, a Bill to regulate cremation was adopted, and the Law on the Commutation of Seignorial Rights was amended. Annual meeting of Jersey Rifle Association, at which a plea for new blood was urged.

25.—Full Court : Alfred Parr (31) appealed against a sentence of £40 fine and two years’ suspension of licence passed on him at the Police Court, judgment being reserved ; at this sitting tributes were paid to the memory of Advocate Philip Le Maistre (former Bétonnier) by the Bailiff and Crown Oflicers. Local Labour Party hold “ Any Questions ? ” night at The Plaza. Annual meeting of Les Amitiés Franco-Britanniques.

26.—States : The Committee of Agriculture made a statement on the sale of potatoes on commission ; a proposal by Senator J. J. Le Marquand on the setting up of machinery for referendums by electors was rejected 32—14 ; at the commencement of the sitting tributes. were paid to the late ex-Deputy Bertram of Grouville. Verdict of accidental death recorded at inquest held on the body of Mr. Francis Amy, who died as the result of injuries sustained when knocked down by a car in Don Road. “ Evening Post " annual staff dinner and dance held at Merton Hotel. Farewell presentations to the Rev. S. Wheeler (Incumbent of St. Paul’s Church) and Mrs. Wheeler.

27.—Jersey Debating Club votes emphatically «against “That this House would welcome Continental Sunday.”

28.—Inquest held on the body of four-year-old David William Carter, who died from injuries received when knocked down by a car near his home in Brighton Road, a verdict of accidental death being recorded. The rainfall for the month was an inch below average.

February 1953 Part 1

3.—States: The preamble of the Control of Public Service Bill, presented by the Civil Service Board, was adopted ; a statement on the marketing of the potato crop was made by the president of the Committee of Agriculture. The appeal for clothing and bedding for relief of the East Anglia flood disaster victims brings an. Immediate response, the first pantechnicom of gifts being despatched the same day ; a fund was also opened at “ The Evening Post ” offices.

4.—Annual general meeting of the Jersey Cage Bird Society, it being decided that poultry classes be discontinued.

5.—States: The Control of Public Service Bill was adopted but lodged au Greffe with amendments; a contribution to the Lord Mayor of London’s Flood Relief Fund was agreed to in principle.

6.—The Island makes magnificent response to the Flood Distress Fund, more than £3,000 being received at “ The Evening Post ” offices in three days ; more than 30 tons of clothing and bedding were also shipped from the Island during the same period. Underwater fishing club formed, the inaugural meeting being held at the Chamber of Commerce.

7.—St. Saviour’s first municipal ball held at West Park Pavilion.

10.—States : The House discusses the powers of the Beautés Naturelles Committee, the debate being adjourned: civil servants’ sick pay and insurance benefits were also discussed; it was announced that-23 tickets to view the Coronation had been allotted to the Island ; a Bill to empower the Petty Debts Court to make orders in respect of the separation of married couples and the legal custody of children was adopted. Westerly gale strikes the Island, the incoming mailboat being two hours late. Total of the Flood Disaster Fund reaches £6,979—Island Players present “ Dark Victory" at Springfield. Jersey Musical Union annual meeting. Annual meeting of Jersey Maternity and Infant Welfare Centre.

12.—States : Deputy Troy's resolution regarding the powers of the Beautes Naturelles Committee carried by-25 votes to .23, and the Committee deferred their decision until the next sitting. St. Peter’s ecclesiastical assembly discusses tree felling, the report on same being adopted ; at the parochial assembly Mr. J. C. Vautier was appointed registrar.

14.—Netherlands Air Force Dakota attempts landing at Airport in snowstorm to pick up consignment of clothing for Dutch flood Victims but is forced to fly back; the Flood Disaster Fund to date totals: 
£9,346 45.

16.—New classrooms opened at Victoria College, the new de Carteret Building being named by the Bailiff. Skal Club of Jersey hold ladies’ night dinner, Sir Alexander and Lady Coutanche being the principal guests. College Preparatory cross-country races, new senior and junior records being set up.

17.—States: The National Service Bill came before the House today and was defeated by 25-23 ; Senator Collas, sponsor of the Bill, thereupon- resigned as did the members of the Defence Committee;

Deputy Hettich, president of the Beautés Naturelles Committee, also announced the resignation of his Committee following their defeat at the previous sitting and Deputy Baal was asked to form a new Committee ; the House also debated compensation awards made by the Committee of Agriculture in regard to foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks and these were upheld. The Flood Fund total passes the £10,000 mark, being now £10,192.
