Written after watching Simon Armitage's excellent documentary on Homer's Odyssey.
Odyssey
Against futility, what can we mortals do?
Will I see Ithaca again, such tears I weep?
Tossing and turning in a darkest sleep
Alone, bereft, all dead and lost my crew
I remember Troy burning, so many we slew
But the destruction we sow, we also reap
Against futility, what can we mortals do?
Will I see Ithaca again, such tears I weep?
The anger of the gods is great, I knew
The wrath of Poseidon from the deep
Tossed by waves, our lives made cheap
Athena, help me, bring me life anew
Against futility, what can we mortals do?
