3.—May Assizes The only case before the Court was that of William [unclear] for illegally entering Swanson's Hotel, Esplanade and stealing. John Jesty, charged with criminally and fraudulently obtaining six different occasions between July and December, 1964 the value of £48 11s. 2d.; after a full day‘s hearing accused was found guilty and sentence of three years imprisonment passed. Salvation Army centenary thanksgiving service held at the Town Hall.
4.—Before the Full Court. Michael Peter Sampson (20), was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for breaking and entering Patricia Marlese, Colomberie, last September and stealing clothing worth £600 and for illegally entering Swanson’s Hotel. Esplanade and stealing £715 1s.1ld. Judgment given at the Royal Court in favour of Mr. P. J. G. Wallis. trading as the Parade School of Motoring. who had sought an injunction against Mr. D. J. Taylor. a former employee, restraining him from engaging in the business of driving instruction in the Island for one year from March 5, 1965. De La Salle College presentation of " The Pirates of Penzance ” at St. Mark’s Church Hall. St. John and St. Lawrence spring cattle show held at Midlands, St. Lawrence. ‘
5.—Trinity and St. Martin combined spring cattle show held near Les Croix, La Maison Maret. Trinity. Election of third Centenier for St. Ouen, Mr. D. J. de la Haye being returned unopposed. In the April export figures, produce and flowers worth £187,000 were sent from the Island.
6.——In two appeals against conviction and sentence heard at the Royal Court today that of Thomas Johnson against one of the sentence was upheld and his case remitted to the Police Magistrate for appropriate sentence; the second appeal, that of Allan Patrick White was dismissed. Jersey Drag Club spring show held at Springfield.
7.—Verdict of accidental death recorded at inquest held on the body of Mr. Alfred Walter James Le Scelleur (60) who received fatal injuries when he fell through a fanlight m the roof space to the passage below: at the States Building on Wednesday while carrying out repairs. Eleventh Channel Islands International Air Rally opens at the Airport the weather delaying the start. Western three-parish show held at St Ouen. .
11.—Following the new Gambling Law coming into effect, a sitting of the Gambling Licensing Authority was held at the Royal Court, when seven of the 27 applications for betting office licences heard yesterday were refused. St. Brelade’s spring cattle show held at Sands Farm, fewer entries being recorded.
12,—It was stated today that I.T.V. television in St. Helier is being adversely affected by the construction of the new power station chimney at La Collette. Durrell expedition brings back 90 animals for the Zoo after expedition to Sierra Leone.5
13. The first Assise d’Heritage of the year held at the Royal Court, the customary halberdier guard being mounted by Army section cadet of Victoria. College C.C.F. -St. Helier Ecclesiastical Assembly approved memorial to the late Dean Le Marinel to be installed in the south transept of the parish church. Jersey Gleemen hold celebrity concert at the Opera House. John Heddle Nash (baritone) being guest artiste.
14.——Sentences of 12 months imprisonment each were passed on Geoffrey Straughen Younger and Charles William Malcolm Ward at the Royal Court today for breaking and entering G. D. Laurens's premises in Hill Street and stealing goods valued at £15. A 19-year-old Liverpool youth, Joseph Francis Hulme, sentenced to four months’ imprisonment at the Royal Court for stealing two shirts and a piece of steak from Concorde Ltd.
17.—Two Irish farm workers who had only arrived in the Island the previous evening lost all their belongings in a fire which destroyed the greater part of a timber-built hut at Les Ormes Farm, St. Lawrence. -Thieves broke into the store of Marks and Riches Ltd., potato merchants. of 40 Esplanade, on Saturday night and after ripping off the locks of two safes got away with £80 in cash and cheques for more than £103. At the Town Hall today the Constable gave a reception for two distinguished personalities now in the Island, Mr. David Kossoff the actor, and Councillor W. J. Lewis, Major of Gloucester.
