1954 Hotels and Tourism - Part 11

1954, and this month I will be looking at my Chamber of Commerce 1954 Holiday guide, I am struck by how many of the hotels listed here have vanished. In this blog I look at some of those listed, and also at some of the breaking news for that year. I've also tried to check where the hotels were and what replaced them.


To set the scene for the year, here are some events during 1954.

April 1954

10.. Conclusion of annual badminton tournament held at the Badminton Hall, Roussel Street.

12. Mr. St. Barbe Baker, founder of the Men of the Trees, addresses members at meeting held in the Hall of Victoria College.

14.. His Excellency and Lady Nicholson pay official visit to Corbiére Lighthouse.

15.. Royal Empire Society chairman addresses Jersey branch members at West Park Pavilion.

16.. Fine weather for Good Friday. with heavy traffic both at the Airport and Harbours: at Springfield the Jersey Football League were beaten 5-2 by Finchley; in the evening there were packed houses at. the Odeon for the showing of religious films.

17. Visiting University College (London) team defeats Jersey Athletic Club by 51 points to 24 at {College Field.

19..-Many outdoor sports favoured by the fine weather; the second point to point meeting of the year at Val de Ia Mare was attended by a large crowd. as was the football match at Springfield, where a J.F.L. team beat Hayes 2-0; the sand racing at St. Ouen’s Bay also attracted its quota of spectators; in the morning the annual road race managed by the J.A.C. was won in record time by University College, London; at Springfield Theatre in the evening the Jersey Green Room Club presented “ The Two Bouquets ”; at. Crabbe range the N.R.A. gained a five points win over the JR.A. in their annual match.

20.. Members of the States, headed by the President, Sir Alexander Coutanche (Bailiff) make presentation to Mr. H. F. Ereaut, M.B.E. States Treasurer, retiring after 47 years' Service. Shocking accident occurred at Belmont Road corner, a. seven-year. old boy, Frederick Peter Fox, being trapped beneath a reversing lorry and later dying from his injuries ; a verdict of accidental death, was subsequently recorded at the inquest.
