17.—Ceremonial was provided for the visit to the Island of the Commander-in-Chief R.A.F. Coastal Command, Air Marshal Sir Paul Holder, K.B.E.; C.B., D.S.O., D.F.C. when he called on His Excellency the Lieut.- Governor, a guard of honour being provided by Marine Cadets of the Jersey Unit of the-Sea Cadet Corps ; later they were guests on the B.A.C. 1-11 " bus stop " jet which had arrived on her first flight to the Island. —In the contested election for Centenier at St. Clement's Mr. E. F. Le Masurier was the successful candidate. defeating his opponent, Mr. A. C. Le Cuirot. by 41 votes.—St. Peter's parish assembly increases rate by 3d to 2s per quarter; much discussion arose over the new diversionary road for the Airport proposed by the States in which it was said the parish had not been consulted.
18.—R.J.A. and H.S. summer show held at Springfield, the number of entries in the flower show being high ; the supreme championship of the cattle show went to Mr. F. T. Avrill, of St. Ouen.
19.—R.J.A. and H.S. summer show continues at Springfield with the horse show in which 100 riders take part.—Evidence in the case against 27-year-old Brian Henry de la Mare, who pleaded not guilty to three counts of assaulting a young woman on Mount Bingham on July 23 and with having an offensive weapon was heard at the Royal Court today, when the case against accused was dismissed.--St. John's parish assembly fixes rate at 1/6 per quarter, as last -year ; it was stated that a parish secretary would be appointed at a salary of £250 p.a. with a six-hourly week.
20.—An Island-wide search commenced early this morning following the escape from prison of 17-year-old London-born Keith Jeffrey Ellwood, who should have appeared at the Royal Court today ; a warder has, been suspended by the Prison Governor.—Fines totalling £200 with 20 guineas costs imposed by the Royal Court on Mr. and Mrs. Morris Lewis of. Lancashire, Parade Road, for infractions of the Tourism Law.---A 20-year-old youth, Alan Adams, who pleaded guilty at the Royal Court to breaches of the public peace, was put on probation for three years.—Verdict of accidental drowning recorded at inquest held on 13-year-old Colin Richard Wadsley, a visitor, who was drowned while bathing in a swimming pool at the Hotel Savoy, Rouge Bouillon.
21.---Alfay, a 42-ton cruiser, owned by Mr. A. Regal, the building contractor, badly holed by her sister ship Turnabout in St. Helier Harbour ; the Fire Service saved the vessel from sinking.
24.—Bouley Bay Harbour, now being called “the graveyard for boats " shrouded in mystery following the sinking of the Ultra Violet and another vessel, the Austerly, found holed and taking in water.
25.—Open verdict recorded at inquest held on the body of Mr. C. J. Cartwright (56), found dead in bed at his home, 6 Town Mills, last Thursday; deceased had died from barbiturate poisoning accelerated by alcohol.
26.—After six days of freedom, Keith Jeffrey Ellwood, the 17-year-old prisoner who broke out of jail last Thursday night, was caught in a combined police operation as he came through a field of tomatoes at Bagatelle, St. Saviour, shortly after 3 o'clock this morning.—Local business-man Brian Edward Chilvers, 31-year-old proprietor of Saints Electrix, David Place, put on probation of three years by the Royal Court on 44 charges of defrauding a hire purchase company of approximately £2,500. —Annual St. Lawrence Horse Show and Gymkhana held at St. Andrew's Park.—Before the Royal Court, 17-year-old Keith Geoffrey Ellwood pleaded guilty to committing a grave and criminal assault on Mr. W C. Breakspear and to stealing a holdall containing 30/- worth of food-stuffs, was committed into custody pending admission to Borstal; jointly charged was Brian Joseph Owen (23), and he was bound over for a period of two years.
27.—A 25-year-old native of Cardiff, Michael James Collins, jailed for six months at the Royal Court on charges of assault and being in possession of drugs.—Verdict of accidental death recorded at inquest on 51-year-old Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Oldridge, found dying at the foot of the stairs after she had struck her head against a radiator at her home.
30.—Two race-meetings promoted by the Jersey Drag Hunt and Chase Club over the Bank Holiday weekend, were both well attended.
31.—Hundreds of people followed, delayed their shopping or left work to watch the 100-strong Brigade of Ghurkhas Band march through town en route for the first-concert of their three-day visit to the Island.
