Come ye thankful people come
Raise the song of harvest home
All is safely gathered in
Free from sorrow — free from sin
remind us only too readily that it is September. Summer is starting to slip by and autumn is already well on the horizon. The recipes for harvest loaves are once again being dug out and soon the churches will be decorated with the fruits of the earth.
The 1994 Harvest Festival at All Saints will hopefully bear fruits of nearly ten years without a priest for as well as celebrating our own Harvest Festival on 25th September that date will announce the arrival of Geoff Houghton and his family from Southampton to take over as Priest-in-Charge of All Saints and St Simon's, and a special service will be held at All Saints on Monday 26th September at 8 pm to be followed by a celebration buffet supper in the church hall after the service.
Our Sea Sunday Songs of Praise held in July was another "All Saints success" with a congregation of over 130 attending. Naval and various shipping companies' flags together with several life jackets decorated the church and as a result of all our efforts the collection of £156 was donated to the Missions to Seamen.
Our sixth annual barbecue held during August was attended by nearly eighty people who enjoyed fine weather, good food ranging from chicken, sausages and burgers to trifles and rich gateaux accompanied by red and white wines and soft drinks. Cheese and biscuits with tea and coffee rounded off the meal whilst Donald Ahier, our organist, arranged tractor rides for the Junior Church members —and some older members too!
Finally, and hopefully by the time these notes are read, plans should be well under way for our new link development between the church and the church hall.
COLLECTIONS. Our collection total for the 1994 Christian Aid Week amounted to £373.
DONATIONS. Our August donation and Songs of Praise collection amounting to £200 went to the British Red Cross Rwanda Appeal.
Ellen Rohde. Rebecca's mother and Godmother were also baptised at All Saints in 1950 and 1962 and both travelled from Denmark for the occasion.
FUNERAL. 25th July, Joe W Moore (aged 81 years). Joe and his wife were previous care-takers of All Saints Church during the 1980's.

A VERY big thank you to all who were involved in the Thanksgiving Festival at St Clement's at the end of July: to those who made music, to those who arranged flowers, to those who organised the exhibitions, to those who planned and designed, to the stewards and the caterers, to those who came to share. We are very grateful to you all.
The whole weekend proved to be a really enjoyable and encouraging time, starting with the wonderful concert (and what someone described as an electric moment when we sang "Thine be the glory") and going on through the weekend to the Songs of Praise — and the opportunity then to turn our thoughts to and giving to the needs of the people of Rwanda.
It was a Thanksgiving Festival, and we do thank God for the many blessings we have received: in this Festival and over the years, for the 1594 chalice which "sparked off' the Festival and for the love to which that chalice and the Holy Communion point us, the love which led Jesus to lay down his life Mr us.
Pathfinders and Sunday School start up again on 11th September with a service at 10 am at St Clement's, to which children, young people and their parents are warmly invited.
Harvest Thanksgiving has been arranged for 25th September (decorating on the morning of the 24th) with the Harvest Supper at the Parish Hall at 7.30 pm on 30th September. Harvest Thanksgiving at St Nicholas will be on 2nd October.
We have to say farewell to Stanley and Sheila Dark who are moving to Christchurch. Stan has been an Almoner and has been a great "handyman" in the congregation (he made the candle shelves we use at Christmas, he has made various items of scenery for holiday clubs) and Sheila has been one of the flower arrangers. We thank them for their work and fellowship and wish them God's blessing in their new home.
Please note: two events on 14th - the Silent Auction for St Luke's Hospital at Church House and the Deanery Conference at St Aubin.
And looking ahead: the Bible Society Walk for the Word takes place on Saturday 1st October (in support of a project: "Good News for the Children of Kerala" (in South India). Walkers and sponsors are needed.
HOLY BAPTISM. 10th July, Zak Louis Davidson; 17th, Gigi Angele Neil; 24th, Claudia Catherine Fry; 31st, Elliott Gregory Mueller.
FUNERALS. 12th July, Dulcie Edwina Chant Giles; 19th, Vera Mary Jane Perchard Russell; 22nd, Denis Archibald Willmett; 3rd August, Ethel Marie Pierce Wells; 5th, Clara Rosina Morgan; 9th, Regina May Rayson Horton

DEDICATION OF GERMAN CEME-TERY COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE. Sunday 2nd October will see the fulfilment of long-standing endeavours for an appropriate commemoration for the former German Military Cemetery at St Brelade's. Every year visitors come asking to see the cemetery only to be told that it no longer exists. A few years ago David Ling produced an excellent illustrated history of the German Cemetery which sells well to visitors. This fascinating booklet contains some excellent archive photographs
It is some years ago that the suggestion of a commemorative plaque was raised. Support was given by the Channel Islands Occupation Society and particularly from its German members. An appeal was raised to cover the costs. The commission to carry out the work was given to Mr Alec Peever, one of the foremost craftsmen in stone in the country. The stone is rectangular in shape with a gentle curve on the top surface incorporating a dove of peace carrying an olive branch in its mouth. The inscription records the facts concerning the first burials of prisoners of war during the First World War and subsequent burials from amongst members of the occupying forces. The inscription is completed by the short traditional Latin prayer "Resquiescant in pace" (May they rest in peace). On the day of dedication there will be one main morning service at the Parish Church combining the Sunday Praise and Parish Communion services, and held at 11 am. His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor and Lady Sutton have signified their intention of being present, as has the Deputy Bailiff, Mr Philip Bailhache (in the absence of Sir Peter Crill). The preacher will be Canon Juergen Simonson who was born in Dresden of Jewish and Gentile parentage and served for some while in the infamous German labour organisation, Organisation Todt. Escaping from his labour battalion in France he served for a while with the French Resistance and eventually came to England where he became a member of the Anglican Church and sought ordination as a priest. Now retired, and living in our diocese, Canon Simonson is a Theological Moderator for those in Winchester Diocese who train for the Readership. After the Eucharist a procession will be made to the site of the plaque which will be unveiled by the Hon John Coutanche, Lieutenant-Bailiff and son of Lord Coutanche, Bailiff of Jersey during the Occupation years. The dedication of the plaque will then conclude the ceremony.
1995 STEWARDSHIP PROGRAMME. Following on the "Day of Vision" held earlier this year, the Church Council members of St Brelade and St Aubin-on-the-Hill have been considering the many suggestions which were thrown up in the discussion. In general terms it seems that we are being called to make our church more welcoming by "broadening the fringe," and in particular by the holding of informal social occasions at which new members of the congregation can get to know existing members and to feel more part of the church family than they are able to do when occasionally attending Sunday worship. The Stewardship Supper will be held on Friday 4th November at Communicare, and Stewardship Thanksgiving Sunday will be on 11th December.
HARVEST THANKSGIVING will be held in all churches on Sunday 25th September and the Harvest Supper and Barn Dance at Communicare on Saturday 1st October.
CONFIRMATION. On Sunday 18th September our Confirmation Service will be conducted by the Bishop of Southampton, Bishop John Perry, at 6 pm. This will include Holy Communion, and will be the principal service of the day. The Prayer Book service of Mattins will be celebrated as usual, but in its entirety, without Holy Communion, at 11 am in the morning. Please pray for those preparing for the Sacrament: Tina Russell-Biggie, Audrey Le Bas, Sarah Adams and Rod Pringle.
FRENCH HOLY COMMUNION. The quarterly celebration in French will be held on Saturday 1st October at 11 am.
HOLY BAPTISM. 10th July, Joshua Tella, Victoria Grace Markland; 24th, Charlotte Jan de Carteret, Natalia Elizabeth Hopfinger Stevens.
HOLY MATRIMONY. 9th July, Andrew Schaffer and Michelle Price; 16th, Stephen Darren and Maxine Camp.
