I wanted to write something with a reflective, almost philosophical quality, blending Samhain imagery with Heraclitus, Pythagoras, and existence in a new kind of existence, a renewal or new creation. Pythagoras provides an unexpected but effective bridge from change to permanence through mathematical and musical patterns.
I wanted to show how identity is pattern rather than substance. The water changes but the waterfall remains; notes pass away but the melody survives; the body dies but something of the self continues. That is a very Pythagorean way of approaching the mystery of death, and it fits the Samhain theme of crossing boundaries between worlds.
Samhain Journey
Death leaves like a bird in flight
A soul departing from body cold
Drawn over towards a shining light
Time of change for young or old
The waterfall changes every day
And yet is looks the same as well
Here is a mystery of death’s way
Transmigration’s ancient spell
Pythagoras saw numbers strange
And harmonies in musical note
Patterns endure with every change
The mystery in the song he wrote
Journey’s end is a new beginning
A phoenix reborn in fire singing
